  Clutch Control

One of the first things you learn when driving in manual transmission is to control the vehicle speed using clutch control. You may have observed that a car starts when the key is inserted and turned, but it does not move until you operate the clutch. The clutch pedal, when completely released, allows for a full contact between engine apply power directly to the driveshaft. The opposite thing happens when the clutch pedal is completely pressed. In such a case, the engine does not form a link with the driveshaft which means no power can pass from the engine to the driveshaft and wheels.

How Does Clutch Control Work

Clutch control happens when you partially engage your cars clutch plate using the clutch pedal instead of the accelerator pedal, effectively controlling a car at zero torque and zero rpm to move. Clutch control also means partially engaging the clutch, allowing it to slip, so that only a fraction of the engines power makes contact with the driveshaft. Benefits of Clutch Control Knowing how to control the clutch offers you several benefits, including:

Driving at Low Gear and Low Speed

You can use clutch control to achieve a smoother ride at low gear and low speed. This is done by slipping the clutch; that is, you are in effect just partially engaging the clutch 0pedal so that the friction on the clutch plate will let your drive shaft to match the speed of the engine instead of translate small variations in speed into large changes in engine braking and acceleration. After the car achieves a suitable speed, you can then engage the clutch completely so that you can control the cars speed either by changing your engine speed or by partially disengaging the clutch again. This technique is usually taught to new drivers as a means of controlling acceleration in situations when a car is pulling away from a complete stop or when a car is moving at low speed without causing the engine to stall.

Great for Uphill Start

Driving in a slope can be very challenging, especially for first-time drivers. A good way to make sure your does not stall while maneuvering on an uphill slope is to engage the clutch more slowly than normal while revving your engine higher than normal.

Avoids Spinning The Wheels

Clutch control is helpful not only in difficult slopes but also during adverse road conditions such as snow or ice which can cause your wheels to spin or your engines to stall. In such conditions, drivers are advised to pull away in a high gear to maintain traction with the road. This means slower engagement of the clutch as you change gears to the highest possible gear. Once in a high gear, its important to engage the clutch slowly so that your engine does not stall or, worse, your wheels spin out of control.

Moving to a Higher Gear Under Maximum Power

This is commonly used in off-road and racing conditions where higher speed and performance are needed. Slipping the clutch applies more torque to the cars wheels even though the fraction of power used in the clutch increases faster than usual. You must take note that excessive use of clutch control increases the wear and decreases the lifespan of the clutch. Use clutch control only when necessary, and have your cars engine checked regularly to make sure its safe and roadworthy. Drive safe!
